Jesse Lynn Madera’s upbringing was chronicled by music and big moves. Born in West Virginia, she’s lived in Houston, Detroit, Nashville, New York City, and is currently settled in Los Angeles with her close-knit family. From a young age, Madera was surrounded by musical performances at family gatherings and parties (many of which included family friend, Johnnie Johnson, the legendary Chuck Berry pianist), and started seriously performing while a theatre major in high school and at NYU. She notes that “The decade of acting training did so much for me as a performer. It influences how I deliver the lyrics, how I write, how I sit or stand or talk between songs.” Americana Highways writes, "She doesn’t merely sing the words, she adds the necessary drama that fleshes out the scene in the lyric.
